With headlines like this:

‘Juice food group is bananas. A glass of juice can sometimes contain much more sugar than a glass of pop.’
– Heart and Stroke Foundation spokesman
And this:
‘Sitting is the new smoking.’

Why are we still sitting here gobbling up 160 pounds of sugar each per year?
You’ve heard a million times from health experts, bloggers (like me), medical organizations and everywhere else, that sugar is terrible for you, but most people don’t truly understand WHY it’s so bad…
In fact, most people falsely think that if they eat sugar, they can just exercise a little bit harder that day or the next day so they can “burn it off”… Unfortunately, that kind of thinking will lead you to an early grave as science now shows, sugar is a significant factor in numerous diseases including the big C. It’s not as simple as “burning off sugar” — It’s about what sugar does internally to the cells of your body, and how sugar gums up your internal workings, causing disease that matters.
If you knew exactly why sugar is so bad for you and what it does to your cells in every tissue of your body, I promise that you would think twice about eating that piece of cake, candy, sugary soft drink, fruit juice, or ice cream, or feeding them to your children.
Here are just a few of the reasons that sugar is killing you…

Sugar and its alter ego Wheat, cause wild fluctuations in your blood sugar. That in itself is problematic as the more regular and even your blood sugar, the less prone you are to overweight and disease, while the converse is also true. All that extra blood sugar flooding your system causes glycation in every cell and tissue of your body. Glycation is a process where sugar mixes with protein to make “glue,” that’s my word for it, that gums up the skin and other structures. Basically if you eat sugar you age faster. If you eat sugar you look and feel like shit.

Sugar messes with your increasing triglycerides to dangerous levels, which can lead you to heart disease. That’s why when I was doing my sugar addict thing, my heart was in trouble too. I had to wear a monitor because I was getting irregular and racing heart beats and I often felt out of breath. When the heart has to wade through the effort of pumping blood from a sugar compromised perspective, it’s not long before you pay. Shortness of breath, heart attack, angina, irregular heart beat and more…all in return for the price of a sweet.

If that weren’t bad enough, eating sugar too frequently also causes Type II Diabetes because you wear out your organs of blood sugar handling – pancreas, adrenals and liver. Worse, we now refer in science to a new diabetes – Diabetes Type III – which is the gradual flooding of the brain with sugar so that it too loses the ability to uptake sugar and eventually quits trying. Then we see dementia and Alzheimers setting in as the brain shrinks in volume and blood vessels. These are diseases that apparently hijack your brain as a result of too much sugar. Brain fog? Fuzzy head? Can’t remember? Put down the cookie. Just stop!

And if you need even MORE reasons why sugar will kill you, sugar also slows down and reduces your white blood cell count, making disease and infection more likely, and even allowing CANCER cells a better chance to form in your body. Within minutes of eating just 1 teaspoon of sugar, your immune system is depressed for several hours afterwards. Think of it this way: how does an oncologist discover where tumors are in your body? He injects you with, essentially a coloured sugar. Why? Because cancer loves sugar. It thrives on sugar. If you want cancer, eat sugar.

Cellulite, fat, mush, acne, cysts, boils, bumps, rashes, fungus, haemorrhoids, bleeding haemorrhoids, bleeding gums, rotten teeth, piles and the like are more likely — hell, they’re a given — when you eat sugar. Inflamed skin. Puffy, bloated, unsightly skin? That’s the work of sugar that initiates an inflammatory response every time.
When I kicked sugar 15 years ago, people would say I looked 15 years younger. At the time I was 39. My fountain of youth was not to be found at the bottom of a gallon of ice cream, although I kept looking for it there. Once I gave all that up, my skin responded by clearing up, shining brightly and tightening up as neat as a drum.

When I was married the first time I’m certain I blamed all the bad on HIM. I could rage. And did. I could scream and shout. And did. I could bitch with the best of them. And I did. But I was also a sugar addict. I didn’t know then what I know now. Sugar made me do it. I was flooding myself with so much sugar every day I didn’t know what normal was. I didn’t know how to show up as normal. Far away from the demon today, a calming peacefulness floods my brain even when life is tossing hand grenades at me. When the veil of sugar lifts, you are suddenly alive again.
Just ask kids at a birthday party. Eat sugar much? Sodas, candy, cake, icing, processed whatever, and in no time they are racing around higher than kites. That’s because they are high. On sugar. High!! The typical case of too much birthday = too much sugar.

Most of what is marketed to us as food is crap. Some of it is worse than crap. It’s less than crap. Sugar in the gut messes with the microbiome, giving it a hefty dose of sugar blues just like you, if you are even half the addict I was. Bring on the yeast infections, the IBS, Crohn’s and other digestive disorders. Then by all means eat whole wheat. The pundits would have us believe we must eat whole grains – they’re good for us.
Whole wheat contains Amylopectin-A, a carb not found elsewhere that rockets blood sugar levels skyward, higher than even lowly and ubiquitous refined white sugar. Science proves it.
My daughter proved it. She, like I, was so addicted to sugar (yes that was my fault) that you could set your watch to ten minutes post eating a load of whole wheat bread, pasta, muffins, bagels, toaster waffles or other such fare, and she would be fast asleep, completely passed out from the hit of dangerous carbs she got. In eating this garbage, she was unknowingly eating foods that, once in the system, behaved like the inhabitants of a roller coaster. Once in the thing you can’t stop it. Once you eat this nutrient-dead, disease-inducing load of poisonous grain carbs, you can’t stop what happens next. Sugar highs and lows so extreme there’s no managing it. You’re just along for the ride until it stops, if it ever does.

Sugar, C12H22O11. You never know how hooked you are until you try to quit. But I suggest you do.

Remember, I’m always listening.
